Tablets- A Need or Want!

There are things which we need in life and there are things which we want in life. And there is hardly a point where our requirements meet our wishes. Tablets fall into same category, and people who fall for tablets are ignorant about the fact that tablets aren't really filling any true need right now as they neither replace computers nor smartphones. It is just a touch-screen media device which indeed is a very advanced portable media player with a much larger screen. Tablets are basically lightweight versions of laptops with less weight and are lighter on features as well.

Let's become a peeping tom and find out points to be taken into consideration before acquiring a tablet.

Operating System
OS available in today's Tablet market are Microsoft Windows 7 (Starter, Home or Professional edition), Google Android OS and Proprietary operating systems like Apple's iOS. As per the scenario, majorly, a cheaper tablet use Android operating systems. Although Android system is relatively new and originates from cellular phones but people who are looking for enough customization and also want to go for a tablet which supports Android OS, its upgraded version, Honeycomb 3.1, is best suited for tablets. Android 3.0 has its benefits, including configurability, an excellent notification system, Adobe Flash support, and seamless integration with Google applications like Gmail, Google Maps and Google Talk for video chat. Whereas with gaining on popularity lately, Microsoft Windows, best known for computer operating system, is powering more costly, convertible form tablets.

Screen size and storage
This is an important consideration and to make things clear on a very first note is that people have a notion when they hear the term '10-inch tablet', this typically refers to the size of the screen and not the size of the tablet itself. Tablet wins over laptops in context of weight but iPad 2 has totally different scenario. When considering storage, the bigger the better-all those apps, when combined with a typical music, video, and photo library, can take up a lot of space. Currently the maximum capacity of a flash-based memory tops out at 64GB, with many of the quality tablets available in 16, 32, and 64GB varieties. Larger capacity models can get as expensive as full-featured laptops.

Performance factors
When it comes to performance, the best way of selection should be based upon processor type and speed, quantity of system memory and storage capacity. Typically, CPU Speeds are higher than 1 GHz. Currently in a majority of tablets, there are three processors installed, Intel Atom (built in cheaper models), Intel Core-i (built in more expensive convertible notebooks) and Arm based CPUs (Apple A4 and NVIDIA Tegra processors). Wherein, a storage device used in tablet computers can be Flash SDD - Solid State Drives (semiconductor media) and HDD - Hard Disk Drive (magnetic media). Difference lies in the cheaper and high-end tablets as cheaper tablets use SDD drives while higher priced notebook convertible tablets use a classical hard drives.

Connectivity
This is another most important point governing the selection of a tablet. Insure that the tablet has Wi- Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS else at least is compatible with Wi-Fi and 3G. Although, nearly every tablet is Wi-Fi proficient but check properly as some models only support the 802.11b/g spec. Therefore, if you plan on doing media-streaming and heavy-duty downloads, look for 802.11n. Whereas a tablet with a 3G cell connection along with Wi-Fi makes sure that we will be in constant touch even when we're out of hotspot range. And considering a model with GPS makes it easier-to-read travel companion than a smaller GPS-enabled phone. Bluetooth can be useful, as well. For one, it offers easy wireless data transfer and connecting a Bluetooth headset or headphones can also be useful for chatting and listening to music.

Built in Cameras
Editing photos on a tablet's larger screen is also innately easier. Although we always tend to measure a camera by megapixels, but tend to detour that real video and photo quality comes from accurate color and the ability to change camera settings for a particular shot. Irrespective of the existing camera, extra cameras is always handy so with a front-facing and one rear facing we can video chat or simply record our self. Bear in mind that most cameras are capable of taking 720p HD shots.

Storage
There is a general notion about storage that you can never have enough of it. Generally a 16 GB space should serve the purpose, in case your work needs to be saved because a tablet with a small storage capacity may not suit a lot of people. A tablet with an SD or microSD slot is a big boon; since it will let you upgrade your storage by adding a removable memory card Also consider whether your tablet has a slot for a micro SD card.

Battery
Battery life is heavily tied to the brightness of the tablet's display and its wireless connection state. This is an important part of selecting a tablet and concerns the life of the battery after it is fully charged. Therefore, there should be a proper check over the original manual with regard to battery life.

Costs
This is the very important and considerate part of buying tablet as it deals with investing the hard earned money. Keeping a track of the market scenario, a proper research is required so that we can acquire the best available tablet PC.
Therefore, it won't be wrong to say that Tablets might be the future of portable computing, but we interact with them in extremely different way than with smartphones or laptops. They don't fulfill any true need right now but they are an easy, portable way to check email, browse the Web, video chat, and listen to music or watch videos, and play games on a relatively bigger screen. Tablets may revolutionize the way we interact with the web and other media. So, just don't expect one to serve as your primary computer as they won't replace your PC.
